"The Social Economy: simply a niche in a capitalist economy or the basis for an alternative?"
"There has been much discussion in recent years about the growth of a range of diverse economic organizations and practices that fall outside of the parameters of conventional capitalism. A variety of names have been given to this phenomenon: the social economy, the solidarity economy, the third sector, the non-profit sector, community economics. I will use the term "social economy" as a relatively encompassing term for these kinds of non-capitalist forms. In this lecture I want to do three things: frst, discuss the theoretical status of the social economy within a broader spectrum of variations in the social organization of the economic activity; second, address the question of the ways in which the social economy points beyond capitalism rather than simply is different from capitalism; and third, discuss the specifc empirical example of the development of the social economy in the Canadian province of Quebec."
Eventtitle: The gendered Conditions for Social participaton and types of Policies promoting a gender-balanced citizenship
"Three Logics of Gender Emancipaton: Gender Equality, Degendering Inequality and Genderlessness""When Marxists specify the central emancipatory goal within the Marxist tradition they invoke the expression "a classless society" and the distributive norm "to each according to need, from each according to ability." No one would frame the ultimate ideal as "class equality," even if reducing the degree of economic inequality within class relations would be seen as a move in the right direction. When it comes to gender, on the other hand, the idea of "gender equality" is often taken to be the central goal. The idea of a "genderless" society, to most people, seems not merely an implausible goal, but an unattractive ideal. This talk will explore the problem of specifying the transformative, emancipatory goals with respect to gender." Erik Olin Wright

As a part of WorkCareSynergie a group of researchers from Roskilde University present their findings on flexibility, children and care. When presenting at the union BUPL the researchers will relate to the coming economic cutbacks in the field of day care.
BUPL, The Danish National Federation of Early Childhood Teachers and Youth Educators, is the union for pedagogues. In the Danish welfare society the pedagogues have a union of their own transgressing the distinction between pre-school teachers, social workers or play-workers. BUPL is one of the main players on the field of child care in Denmark. Offering inspiration for policy making and being in contact with this partner ensures the research a political platform.

Following on from the ESRC/Workcare seminar we held at Brighton Business School on ‘Fairness At Work’ in December you are warmly invited to the forthcoming event at the Work Foundation
Firms, Families and Fairness
What does this mean for different groups during fiscal austerity?
Friday 4th February 2011 – 10 to 5.30pmThe Work Foundation, Palmer Street, London
Speakers include Will Hutton (Director of the Work Foundation), Colette Fagan (Manchester), Sarah Veale (TUC), Jacqueline O’Reilly (Brighton), Annette Cox (IES) Rosie Gloster (IES), Sue Marlow (De Montfort) and Mike Noon (Queen Mary’s).
The recession and the programme of public sector austerity many European nations are now following has provided a new context for the transitions people make in their working lives and how they seek to balance caring with working. How will different groups of workers be affected? And is the principle of “fairness” at work something that applies more easily in good economic times? In this roundtable, academics and policy specialists discuss research which examines how the labour market is adapting to the new political weather.
The event will address:
How individual employers can spur the transition between full and part-time work?
How households make choices about how to balance working and caring responsibilities?
Which groups of workers are likely to be most affected by public sector spending cuts?
How the employment relationship is governed in growing firms?

Is the Danish Welfare Model under pressure? What impact does the EU have on Danish family- and employment- policies? What is "neoliberalism"? And what kind of impact will neoliberal policies have on the traditional welfare institutions?
These were some of the points of debate being addressed by associate professors Rasmus Willig and Anders Ejrnæs from Roskilde University, Denmark. They presented their latest research findings on how work-care relations and family policies in Europe can be understood in the light of neoliberalism.
The debate was arranged by the Danish organization Democracy in Europe.

Re-entering the Labour Market after Parental Leave – Barriers and Support

Abstract by Dr. Michaela Gstrein
Data processing partly by: Mag. Dominik Walch
Paper title: "Re-entering the Labour Market after Parental Leave – Barriers and Support"
With women’s increasing participation on European labour markets, facilitating the reconciliation of work and family life has become an important issue on the agenda of policy makers. Yet, many women in Europe work part time only to combine work and family responsibilities, and often in less secure and long term jobs than men. With the economic crisis, support for young families has been partly reduced and jobs – especially those of women – have become less secure. How will this affect family formation, job perspectives and security as well as reconciliation?
One of the most important transitions in early family life occurs when mothers of young children re-enter the labour market and family life has to be re-organized around the new time-restriction. Various welfare regimes (with their different opinions on private and public family support) have resulted in different adaptation processes, both visible within family life and in the public sphere (on the labour market, in fertility rates, etc.). This paper dwells on the back-to-work transition process from an economic point of view and shows data for international comparisons of this transition and especially detailed data for the Austrian case. It will use existing literature on EU findings (and disseminated in the WORKCARESYNERGIES dissemination project) as well as new Austrian data on the re-entering of the labour market (AMDB, the Austrian Labour Market Service Database) and will offer (1) new insights into how families in general and especially in Austria make this important transition and (2) what effects it has for them as a family, labour market perspectives and social security.

Main findings from research on Work-Life Balance in parts of Europe?
In these student’s seminar we discuss main research findings on work-life balance in different EU countries with a special focus on the situation in Austria. Furthermore, the student’s are working in small groups and try to visualise how they perceive actual conditions on work-life balance in our society.
This event is addressed to master students who conceptualise how to do research and how to manage projects as well as how to disseminate key research findings. The results from the current EU project give them a good idea about what research and dissemination is all about. Therefore we discuss the film and the discussion material presented to policy makers at different workshops.
